Stacking refers to the practice of combining various natural supplements and vitamins with a microdose of Psilocybin. Increasing amounts of research suggest that incorporating medicinal mushrooms can enhance the effects of microdosing. Among the various “stacking methods” being explored, the “Stamets Stack” is the most widely used. Adding Lion’s Mane mushroom and Niacin is believed to stimulate the production of new brain cells.

Lion’s Mane & Niacin

Microdosing with Psilocybin, Lion’s Mane, and Niacin can promote the generation of new brain cells, a process known as neurogenesis in the field of epigenetics. Lion’s Mane has the ability to create new neurons and neurological pathways, which complements the effects of Psilocybin found in truffles and magic mushrooms. Niacin is added to the stack to enhance absorption.

The Paul Stamets Stack

The Paul Stamets Stack is a microdosing protocol designed to enhance the overall experience of microdosing. In addition to the regular dose of Psilocybin, Lion’s Mane powder or extract, and Niacin (Vitamin B3) are included. Stamets designed this specific stack based on the idea that the interaction between these three components can amplify the effects of microdosing.

Paul Stamets

Paul Stamets is an American author, entrepreneur, and mycologist specializing in psychedelics and the medicinal use of compounds found in mushrooms. Rather than seeing old-growth forests, particularly in the northwestern U.S., as resources for logging, he views their fungal genome as having incalculable value.

Born in Ohio, Stamets started his career as a logger before developing an interest in mycology. His hypothesis suggests that Psilocybin acts as a “cellular bridge” between two worlds. By comparing the evolutionary paths of humans and various mushroom species, Stamets believes that fostering new interconnections within the microbiome could lead to several unique evolutionary benefits. His life’s mission is to preserve as many species of mushrooms as possible and to protect pristine forests. Many mushrooms, including Lion’s Mane (also known as Wigweed), possess medicinal properties beneficial to mental health. Stamets believes his “stacking protocol” could unlock the next quantum leap in human consciousness.

What is Lion’s Mane?

Lion’s Mane has long been used to enhance the brain’s functioning. In its natural environment, this mushroom looks far from a typical mushroom, with its creamy white spines resembling the mane of a lion. The most notable substance in Lion’s Mane is the polysaccharides HEM, which have a significant impact on the brain and nervous system. They assist in transmitting signals between nerves and myelin, the substance that coats nerves and facilitates signal transmission between cells. Lion’s Mane is particularly known for cognitive support and enhances various functions. Some examples of its potential effects include:

  • Improving memory

  • Enhancing focus and concentration

  • Reducing anxiety and depression

  • Supporting the digestive system

Lion’s Mane can also serve as an effective nootropic, a substance known to improve brain function and suitable for long-term use. Nootropics are commonly used to boost concentration, especially during periods of intense studying or mental exertion.

What is Niacin?

Niacin, also known as Vitamin B3, is part of the vitamin B complex and exists in two forms: nicotinic acid and nicotinamide. Initially, it was believed that there was only one type of Vitamin B, similar to Vitamin C. However, it later became clear that Vitamin B consists of several active vitamins, and thus the Vitamin B complex is made up of multiple vitamins, each with its own number.

Vitamin B3 plays several important roles in the body, including:

  • Supporting energy levels

  • Benefiting the nervous system

  • Improving memory

  • Helping combat fatigue

Paul Stamets hypothesizes that niacin’s ability to stimulate the peripheral nervous system might extend the nootropic effects of Lion’s Mane and Psilocybin throughout the body, rather than limiting them to the central nervous system. If this is true, it could potentially enhance the connection between the mind and body and help reverse the effects of neurodegenerative diseases.

What to Expect?

Research in this field is still in its early stages, which makes it challenging to draw concrete conclusions. Stamets himself suggests that “the stack” could make a notable contribution to the societal landscape. In a patent application, he mentions that various effects might arise, potentially improving quality of life. Some examples include:

  • Neurogenesis and enhanced neuroplasticity

  • Improved sensory input

  • Improved coordination

  • Enhanced cognitive functions

  • Boosted memory

Many case studies and individual reports indicate positive results, even after just a short period of use. However, Stamets notes that, on average, it may take a bit longer to notice noticeable results, which aligns with scientific expectations.

How to Implement the Protocol?

The stack protocol follows a 5-day cycle. You will take the “stack” for five consecutive days, followed by a 2-day rest. Including a rest period helps prevent the body from developing tolerance to Psilocybin. The protocol is recommended for use over at least 1 to 2 months for optimal results. The following is the suggested daily average for this protocol:

  • 0.5-2 grams of Psilocybin Truffles (based on your preferred Microdose)

  • 0.5 to 1 teaspoon of Lion’s Mane powder (Mushrooms4Life)

  • 1 tablet (100mg) of Niacin (Proviform)

Ultimately, how long you choose to follow this protocol is up to you. Some users report using the Stamets Stack for an indefinite period, while others prefer to take breaks, such as a 2 to 4-week pause after 2 months of use. Always listen to your body and adjust accordingly to find your optimal dosage.

Cordyceps and Vitamin B12

Following the rise in popularity of the Paul Stamets Stack, it didn’t take long before people started experimenting with additional supplements. Reports soon surfaced of users benefiting from stacking the non-psychoactive Cordyceps. In 2020, the Microdosing Institute developed a new formula that combined Cordyceps with vitamin B12. Some of the potential benefits of this combination include:

  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Enhancing vital functions
  • Boosting cognitive abilities
  • Supporting physical performance

The unique combination of Cordyceps and vitamin B12 had already been used in the sports world, but thanks to the Microdosing Institute, it is now regularly incorporated into microdosing protocols. The stimulating effect on metabolism may help reduce fatigue or sluggishness during microdosing, which many users find beneficial.

What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps, scientifically known as Ophiocordyceps sinensis, is a highly versatile mushroom native to China. In the wild, it grows at elevations between 3,000 and 5,000 meters in the Himalayan mountains and other high-altitude regions of Tibet and China. Cordyceps is known for its energizing and strengthening effects on both body and mind. Studies suggest that it contains bioactive compounds that support the neuroendocrine system, which may contribute to its stimulating properties.

Key active compounds:

  • Cordycepin
  • Nucleotides
  • Polysaccharides
  • Sterols
  • Trace elements and minerals

Cordyceps is traditionally used for:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Enhanced lung function and oxygen uptake
  • Metabolic and energy support
  • Liver function and immune system enhancement

In China, top athletes frequently use Cordyceps due to its positive effects on lung capacity and endurance.

What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal-based foods, such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. However, its absorption depends on proper stomach function, which can lead to deficiencies in certain individuals.

Vitamin B12 is essential for:

  • Red blood cell production
  • Nervous system function
  • Supporting metabolism

Unlike other B vitamins, B12 can be stored in the body for a limited time, but any excess is excreted.

How to Follow This Protocol?

This stack is best used alongside the “Every Other Day” Microdosing Protocol. This means taking Psilocybin every other day, while incorporating the following daily dosage:

  • 0.5 – 1 teaspoon of Cordyceps powder (e.g., Mushrooms4Life)
  • 1 tablet of B12 (1500 mcg) (e.g., Proviform)

It is recommended to follow this protocol for at least 1 to 2 months. After this period, take a break of at least 2 to 4 weeks, during which you stop taking Psilocybin. However, Cordyceps and B12 can still be used during this break. After the rest period, you may resume Psilocybin microdosing.

Listen to your body to determine your optimal dosage.
